Tippecanoe Battlefield Memorial & Museum

The Tippecanoe Battlefield Park is located at 200 Battle ground Avenue, West Lafayette, IN, 47906. The 96 acre park includes a national landmark (an 85 foot marble monument) that represents the location of The Battle of Tippecanoe. Other features the park offers include walking trails, a picnic area, museum, shop, and a nature center.

As you enter the park you’ll see the museum/shop to your right, and to your left will be the large monument along with trails throughout the property.  If you ever get a chance to stop by and check out the historic landmark you definitely won’t regret it.  I’ve added more pictures down below that shows what is written on all four sides of the monument –  such as how many American soldiers were killed in action, how many officers were killed, date and times of the battle, and more interesting information.

History – The Battle of Tippecanoe was fought between American forces led by Major General William Henry Harrison and the Shawnee Indians led by Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa (known as “The Prophet”). On November 7th, 1811, a fierce battle broke out that lasted for two straight hours along what is now Prophet’s Rock Road and Prophetstown State Park.  Tenskwatawa requested a “cease fire” from Harrison and his men. Later the Indians ambushed the Americans and it wasn’t pretty for either side. 37 of Harrison’s men were killed and 151 were wounded – The Indian numbers are unknown. The Americans were able to outlast the Indians with more men and more firepower. Eventually the Indians fled Prophetstown as the Americans marched in and burned it down.
