Wolfies Grill in West Lafayette is one of the best restaurants near Purdue University. Purdue University Airport is located at 1501 Aviation Drive, West Lafayette. The airport opened it's doors in November of 1930 and since has become the 2nd busiest Indiana airport behind only Indianapolis International Airport. 1.) Commercial Flights - From 1960 to 2004 there were regular commercial flights in and out of the Purdue University Airport. American Airlines flight on February 15th, 2004 was the last commercial flight at Purdue. The reason? Lack of profit. The demand for commercial flights to and from West Lafayette wasn't enough to keep operations going at the time.
Commercial flights could however return to the Purdue airport in the near future from a new regional development plan. The five-hundred million dollar program is for projects that will transform Indiana. Under this plan there would be (approximately) $25,000,000 put towards Purdue Airport renovations on current buildings along with a new terminal to attract commercial flights.
2.) The airport property has 537 acres.
3.) There are hangars for personal, corporate, and commercial aircraft on the property.
4.) Purdue University is Indiana's 2nd busiest airport.
5.) Aviation technology academic buildings are located on airport property.
6.) There Are Two Runways, parallel taxiways, and an apron area for aircraft maintenance.
7.) The first airport in the country to be owned and operated by a university was Purdue Airport.
8.) Purdue football, basketball, and other programs use the airport when flying to away games.
9.). Purdue had it's own commercial airline
Between 1968-1971 'Purdue Airlines' was open for business. The airline offered flights from West Lafayette to St. Louis, Chicago, and Detroit, Michigan.
10.) Hugh Hefner's plane, "The Big Bunny", was stored and maintained at Purdue University Airport.
11.) The United States Government has designated Purdue University Airport as an emergency landing strip.
12.) There are two medical helicopters that operate from the airport.
13.) Amelia Earhart trained at Purdue Airport.
Amelia trained for her famous flight around the world at the airport and purchased the Lockheed Electra airplane with funds from Purdue. She also worked at the university from 1935-1937!
14.) There are approximately 97,000 annual aircraft operations at Purdue.
